NCAA Day 2 - So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone edition



BOOM!!!!!!  I just watched an overtime game that was won on a putback off an air ball where the Iowa player clearly pushed off and it wasn't called.  All that matters not even one bit because somehow, some way Michigan State managed to lose in the first round.  Michigan State?!?!?!  They are usually a lock to over perform in the tournament.  They made the Final 4 last year as a 7 seed, and they were looking better this year.  There was significant talk that they were robbed because they weren't a #1 seed.  If you remember a few posts ago, I mentioned that exactly zero people picked Middle Tennessee to win this game.   I figured that this would be a year where a top seed would lose early, I just never figured that Michigan State was going to be that team (for the record, there are still more chances for teams like Oregon and Xavier to lose).

The immediate fallout is really very little.  No one got any points, so if you care about the points race, it was more the same.  The really shake up came in the net points.  Tons of people lost a ton of points.  47 people had Michigan State winning the whole thing.  84 people had them in the Championship game.  137 people had them in the Final 4.  170 people had them in the Elite 8.  202 people had them in the Sweet 16.  If you throw in the Dayton loss earlier, only 5 people have any chance at getting points in the next game.

You'd think a loss like this would cripple the gutless brackets, and it does.  They are currently in 201st place in points.  Strangely though, they moved up in the standings on net points.  Because they were a #2 seed and so many people had them going further than the Elite 8, the gutless brackets made up ground on all the people that took MSU to the Final 4.  That's not good.

If you ever needed proof that the net points are less important than net, know that the current leader in total points has Michigan State in the Final game, and is currently in 94th in net points, which seems more likely at this point.  The biggest differences between total and net points are Taran B. (8th in total, 173rd in net points) and Ben J. #1 & Ben J. #4 (181st in total points, 62nd in net points).

Through 6 games today, the total points won for the group as a whole is 2.71.  Obviously, no one went 6/6.  Only 3 people have managed 5/6 (Jeff D., Mason A. #1, Chad L. #3)

There are still 2 games going on in the morning slate of games, but let's look to the afternoon games...

Wisconsin / Pittsburgh

Wisconsin: 139

I always forget that these 2 teams are in the tournament.  Both of these teams are usually among the top seeds, so it's strange them playing in a 7/10 game.  This game seems a little "meh" to me.

West Virginia / SF Austin

West Virginia: 206
SF Austin: 7

I think that West Virginia is a sleeper for a lot of people to come out of this part of the bracket.  I think that SF Austin could pull an upset here.  I've been pretty lousy at predicting these things, but I know that SF Austin has a track record in the tournament, and West Virginia can often times play a really ugly brand of basketball.  If they can't get shots to fall, it could be a long night for the Mountaineers.  Saying that, watch it be a 25 point blowout.

Texas A&M / Green Bay:

Texas A&M: 202
Green Bay: 11

You can probably take what I wrote about the West Virginia / SF Austin game and paste it here with the names changed.  Green Bay beat a very good Valparaiso team to make it here, so they could score an upset.  I think I'd take 2-1 odds that one of Green Bay / SF Austin pulls an upset today.
