Final 4 set

That St. Peter’s game was about as bad a game as could be had by St. Peter’s.  It was largely over before the first commercial break.  In a lot of ways, St. Peter’s had good shots in the first half.  Those shots were falling prior to today, and today they weren’t.  It was a pretty dominating performance from North Carolina.  Good job to St. Peter’s.  It’s definitely a team like Florida-Gulf Coast and UMBC and Richmond over Syracuse in 1991 that will live forever in the folklore of March Madness.

What that leaves us with is nothing but blue bloods.  Every one of the final 4 teams has been to the final 4 times more times than I can remember.  Honestly, Villanova is the least experienced of the bunch and they’ve won the National Title twice in the last 10 years.  Duke, North Carolina and Kansas are all teams that you just immediately write down in your pre-season top 25 every year and don’t even think about.  They are that consistently good.  I’m sure that’s what the NCAA and the TV networks would love to see, as I’m sure the ratings will be very good, especially the Duke / North Carolina Final 4 matchup.

What that means for the pool though is a little different.  Because of all the chalk today, what was a pretty good advantage has now become more or less a coin toss for everyone.  At the start of the day, Kristina H. had a 46.875% chance of winning the pool.  Because Kansas and North Carolina both won, and people had North Carolina and Kansas winning, the results didn’t knock that many people out.  Essentially a lot of scenarios where Kristina H. would win were eliminated (like almost all instances where St. Peter’s or Miami-Florida won the championship).  So her odds fell a little back to earth, and other people’s bubbled up a little.

There are only 8 ways this pool can play out from here on.  The good news is that there are only about 2 ways it can end in a tie for any of the 8 ways.  I hope it doesn’t come down to that.  If it looksw like it might, I’ll reach out to the people involved and ask for tiebreakers.

The other interesting thing is that there are still 2 people that can still win money without having their champion alive.  In both circumstances, they need North Carolina to win it all.  Since only one person picked that to happen, the points will come down to who people had in the finals and how many points they have.  Some people racked up a lot of points, despite not getting any from their champions.  Good picking to those people.
