T-shirt curse is back!

 Well, I wasn’t exactly surprised that Ohio State lost that game.  Villanova is one of those teams that seems to play pretty well in the tournament, and Ohio State doesn’t.  That being said, my measuer of if a team is good or not is whether the overpreform or underperform their seeds.  I can’t really knock Ohio State for losing to a team that they were somewhat expected to lose to.  If they had won, that would’ve been something.  This seemed like a justifiable ending to the Buckeye season.  Now, in a real twist, I have to root for Michigan to knock off Villanova in the next round – and still maintain that Michigan should not even be in the tournament.  This tournament makes for strange rooting interests sometimes.

One way or another, a blue blood team is going to make the Sweet 16 here.  I tend to think it will be Duke.  Michigan State used to be a very reliable team to overperform their seed, but ever since they lost as a #2 seed to Middle Tennessee State, they’ve kind of been a pedestrian team in the NCAA.  This year doesn’t seem to be a vintage team from them.  I’ve heard them described as a jump-shooting team that can’t make jump shots.  That’s bad.  I don’t think this is a vintage Duke team either, but they have more talent overall.  I feel like Duke this year has just been out-talenting teams all season.  That’s been good enough to dominate a down ACC, but I don’t feel they are that strong overall.  Maybe enough for this game though.

I think this is the Wisconsin invitational part of the bracket, since they are playing in Milwaukee.  They may have not beaten Colgate if it wasn’t essentially a home game for them.  I still don’t know what to make of Iowa State, but I guess I’ll brush up on them if they manage to pull this win off.  I’m a little dubious they can.

It seems like a lot of these Sweet 16 games are very heavily tilted toward the favorite.  Almost all of these pick distributions are like Favorite: 170-200, Underdog: 10-30.  I love upsets, so I hope that today isn’t all chalk.  So far, the favorites are 2/2, even though Houston was not the favorite based on seeds.  Nobody wants to see chalk.  Notre Dame has had a really good run so far, and play-in winners can really do some damage.  I doubt they’ll win here, but I feel like someone’s gotta pull an upset sometime right?  Why not here?
