Technically an upset, Iowa State beat LSU for the only lower seeded team in the last 4 to beat a higher seeded team. I was really hoping for Chattanooga. They were winning most of the game against Illinois. The thing about the upsets today is that none of them have been particularly damaging. At least according to the seeds, every one of the upsets today was supposed to lose in the next round anyway. That’s kind of the key to winning these things. You can take a few losses on upset picks in the 1st round, and as long as your Final 4 teams are still alive or even your Elite 8 or Sweet 16 teams, you probably still have a good shot.
To prove that point, three people have gone 12/12 so far
today. The average has been about 9/12
so far, so this was a good day to pick up points apparently.

I’ve mentioned over and over again how I keep a ranking of
teams all season long. As part of that,
I wind up with some favorite teams.
Teams that my rankings have really high, but the actual rankings have
lower. I had 3 teams that I really
liked. I really liked Arizona, who I
thought was the #1 team in the country for the last 2 months. My second favorite team was about one tier
below them – and I was excited about taking them a few rounds further than their
seed, as I was sure they would be underseeded.
That team is Houston (who I had ranked a solid #3). Unfortunately for me, Houston would face
Arizona in the 3rd round if they win. D’oh! But
wait, it gets worse. There was a team
that I had as a borderline ranked team virtually all season. I was going to pick them to make the Sweet 16,
but that team was UAB, and they play Houston in the first round. So, all three of my favorite teams are in the
same eighth of the bracket. Just my luck…. I’m going to be very disappointed one of my
teams will go out on this one, but that’s how it crumbles, cookie-wise.

That distribution seems to be about right. Michigan State used to be about as reliable a
tournament team as there was. You used
to be able to count on them to go a round or two further than their seed would
tell you. However, they haven’t been as
good in recent years. About 3 weeks ago,
I was saying MSU shouldn’t even be a tournament team. It was only a few wins late in the season that
put them in for me. I still like
Davidson though. I watched them a few
times this year, and they are pretty tough.
Vegas Line: Wisconsin -7.5
Picks for Wisconsin: 196
Picks for Colgate: 16
This is actually going to be the last game played in the
first round. It’s also the last chance
to have a serious upset. The fact that
Wisconsin is playing in the state of Wisconsin should help quite a bit. Look out for Colgate though. They are very good.
Vegas Line: Seton Hall -1.5
Picks for Seton Hall: 111
Picks for TCU: 101
Another 8/9 game. If
there’s any balance in the world, the 8 seed will win, giving the 8 seeds a 2-2
record. I think that is pretty much what
they are historically (.500). I don’t have
a horse in this race, with the exception of the winner playing Arizona in the
next round, so I hope they play a triple-OT game.
