I think they scheduled the first set of games so that people that had to work really aren’t going to miss much. They kind of threw a bone to those of us that took the day off in the form of the Loyola-Chicago/Ohio State game, but the other three are total snooze-fests so far.
That being said, the one competitive game today wasn’t
really that fun to watch, unless you are a fan of ice cold shooting. The announcers kept making the point that
Loyola-Chicago came into the game as the third best shooting team in the
country. That team never showed up
today. Even if you give credit to the
Ohio State defense, which was pretty good, that doesn’t explain how they could
go 1/8 from the free throw line. You can’t
really play free throw defense. It was
not great for Sister Jean and Ramblers.
It also wasn’t good for people that picked one of the more popular
upsets. I have to admit, conventional
wisdom on upsets this year has been way off…
In the other game, Auburn was slow starting, but pretty much
cruised – giving a lot of people some much needed points, and all but dashing
the hopes of Owen R., who was the only person with the guts to take
Jacksonville State not just to win this game or the next game but 6 games
total. Much respect to Owen for laying
it on the line like that.

I feel like I know who the president is rooting for
here. I feel like the last three games
have all been this exact same game. I
mid-teen point favorite who maybe starts slow, maybe doesn’t. Eventually they figure it out and run the
other team out of the gym. I don’t have
high hopes this one will be any different.
The plus side is that I can probably relegate this one to one of the
minor screens and promote if I’m wrong.

I’m a little torn on this one. Almost the entire season, I had USC as an
underrated team. I also thought
Miami-Florida was an overrated team (especially after beating Duke). Now I think they are kind of properly rated,
and 7/10 seems like a good spot for them.
I’m hoping that means this one is a good game. 40 people have the winner of this game moving
on to the Sweet 16, so there is more on the line here than just the one point.
Vegas Line: Alabama -4
Picks for Alabama: 128
Picks for Notre Dame: 84
This is how fickle I am.
Last season, I almost won this pool largely on the back of nailing the
Alabama run to the Elite 8. I was really
high on them being an underrated team and doing well, and they did. This year, I absolutely hate this Alabama
team, and even though they are seeded #6, I didn’t think they should be in the
tournament at all. I think this season,
they’ve played up to their competition, which is probably why they are here,
but they’ve also played way down as well.
Like, they beat Gonzaga by 10, but also lost to Iona, Georgia and
Missouri as double digit favorites. You
never know what you are going to get with them.
Notre Dame, on the other hand, needs to figure out a way to bounce back
after a grueling double overtime win in the play-in game just to be here. I still think they’ll win, but that’s mostly
based on my hatred of Alabama than anything the Fighting Irish will do.

Picks for Texas: 94
Picks for Virginia Tech: 118
Take everything I just said about Alabama (except for the
part about liking them last year) and apply it to Texas. This is another #6 seed I didn’t have in the
field. They were somewhat inexplicably
ranked most of the season, but I never thought they were any good. They also happen to be playing a red hot
Virginia Tech team, which kind of explains the disparity in picks despite the disparity
in seed numbers. Based on how this
tournament is going, watch Texas cruise to an easy victory.
