The devastation of ISU edition.

Well that sucks.  I really thought Iowa State was going to pull it out at the end of that game.  Congrats to UAB for doing a variety of things: Beating the #3 seed in the South region.   Providing the first upset of the day.  Making sure that virtually no one gets to keep a perfect bracket by probably about noon today.  Providing separation in the standings.  Being the first team to beat a team that someone had winning it all.

As one might expect, an upset of that magnitude really shakes up the standings (in as much as the standings can be shook up after 2 games).  For the first 2 rounds I keep the rankings based on points won, with the tiebreaker being the points lost.  So, a current perfect bracket looks like this: 2(0).  2 points won, no points lost.  Jay H. #1 looks like this: 1(-63).  He got Notre Dame right, but Iowa State winning it all cost him 63 points (for reference, there are only 192 points possible).

That's the rankings.  Here they are after 2 games:
1. Brian G. #2: 2 (0)

Typically, after 2 games, there would be a lot more bunching of scores, but a lot of people had Iowa State going out to the Sweet 16 or further.  They were a fashionable pick to beat Gonzaga or Duke at some point.  173 people had them in the Sweet 16.  83 had them in the Elite 8.  35 had them in the Final 4.  20 people had them in the Championship game, and the 1 person had them winning it all.  Total devastation.  I love it (kind of).  I wish I was on the good side of the devastation.  At least now I probably don't have to sweat my bracket too much.

There are 2 more games coming up:

Butler / Texas.  Here is the pick distribution:

Butler: 108
Texas: 98
Pretty tight for Texas.  I thought they shouldn't be in the tournament at all, but people really seem to like them.

The other game coming up is SMU/UCLA

SMU: 139
UCLA: 67

Speaking of not belong in the tournament, come on down UCLA!  Somehow "gaining steam" while losing and beating also rans is good enough to make the tournament if you happen to be named UCLA.  I guarantee is my alma mater happened to play the exact schedule, they would be in the NIT.  I am pulling hard against them, even though I should really be hoping for all hell to break loose in the South region to give me any kind of shot.

It sounds like the Baylor / Georgia State is coming down to the end.  2 games in, 2 great finishes so far.  Let's go for 3!!!

BTW, I'm up to Katy Perry's "California Gurls".   I should be in the C's for a while.....
