We finally had a legitimate upset. Every "upset" we've had so far was
by a team that was at most a 2.5 point underdog. USC was a 6.5 point underdog. That's a little more like it. I'm excited about it, even though it doesn't
do anything for my bracket personally.
Not only is it our biggest upset so far, it does, by far, the most
damage to people's brackets. 91 people
had them in the Sweet 16, 22 people had them in the Elite 8, 9 had them in the
Final 4 (only the 3rd team anyone had in the Final 4 to lose so far). Kevin F. #3, Jill M. #1 and Molly R. all had
SMU going to the Championship title game, and Kevin F. #3 and Jill M. #1 had
them winning it all. It's hard to
imagine that those brackets are going to be alive when I run the numbers after
the Sweet 16.
We also are down to the last surviving perfect bracket. Only Chris T. #1 has gone 22/22. He has his work cut out for him if he wants
to stay that way however. He has
Creighton winning in the first round, and they are losing at half time. Good picking so far though. Congratulations Chris T. #1. It will be interesting to see how he actually
finishes in the standings. I don't know how high or strong the correlation is between
ranking in the opening round and final placement. I sometimes feel like the opening rounds are
a lot like driving the ball a long way in golf.
It's showy and it helps to get a good score, but if you can't putt, then
you aren't going to win many tournaments.
I think the winner of this thing will probably nail the something like
14 of the last 15 games (where all the points are). That's why I refer to these early games as
tiebreakers . Because of the scoring,
you are only essentially competing against the people that picked the same
champion as you did. These early games help
determine the rankings in those sub-tournaments.
Anyway, 58 people went 2/2 after Louisville took coasted to
a victory over Jacksonville State (Yawn).
One person went 0/2 , and it was none other than my brother, Kirt R.
#2. I think this was his "upset
special" bracket. That one wasn't
faring all that well anyway, so maybe this was a mercy killing.

I'll be back with updated standings after the last games
finish, but we are heading into the afternoon sessions, so there will be 4 more
games at roughly the same time:
Kansas / UC Davis
Kansas: 224
UC Davis: 1
Vegas Line: Kansas by 23.5
What to say about this game?
Ummm... play-in winners are 1-1
so far?!? UC Davis has no chance in this
one. I will spend the rest of the time
complaining about bracket names. The
only person to take UC Davis is a bracket named "Tim's Stepson". I can live with this, but I'm not a big fan
of the oddball names and I'll tell you why.
When I get a bracket like my personally least favorite, "Cool
Guy" bracket, I have no idea who that is.
If I need to contact that person for something like a tiebreaker score
or payment, I have no way of knowing where to go. It's more of a logistic complaint than
anything else. "Tim's Stepson"
is fine because I know who Tim is, but "Cool Guy"? That could be me on my more egocentric days.
Dayton / Wichita State
Dayton: 47
Wichita State: 178
Vegas Line: Wichita State by 6.
Hey, have you heard that Wichita State is underseeded at
#10? I feel like that was the only thing
I heard from the first few days after the brackets were released. Apparently, that message was received loud
and clear by the picking group, since they overwhelmingly chose Wichita State
to win this game. I feel bad for
Dayton. They have a good team, and I
feel like they are getting screwed for the second year a row. Last year they had to play Syracuse in the
1st round, and I didn't think that Syracuse belonged in the tournament. They had a good run 2 years ago, so maybe
that's some consolation. Maybe they can
make a run this year. That would be good
motivation for Archie Miller.
Duke / Troy
Duke: 223
Troy: 2 (Missy W. #2, Jack K. #4)
Vegas line: Duke by 20
Booo... I hate
Duke. Enough said about that....
One more thing: Grayson Allen is dirty.
Cincinnati / Kansas State
Cincinnati: 144
Kansas State: 81
Vegas Line: Cincinnati by 3.5
Beware the play-in winner.
Kansas State looks pretty good, and Cincinnati has looked a little
lackluster down the stretch here. This
could be the upset of the afternoon if it works out. I don't have much commentary on this
game. It promises to be a good game, but
I don't know much about Kansas State or Cincinnati this year.
Good luck to everyone!!!!!
