NCAA Day 1 - 6/6 chalk edition

Well we are 6 games into the tournament and we still have yet to have an upset of any kind.  That would explain why more than half of the field is still undefeated.  Also, we have yet to have anyone lose even one of their Final 4 teams.  That's a long stretch of the tournament without any carnage.  I guess the upside of that is that it keeps more people alive longer into the tournament, but it makes the games later on just that more important to get right.

There's still the MTSU/Minnesota game going on and the Vanderbilt/Northwestern game, so we should see a little more shake up in the standings after those games are complete.

If you remember from earlier in the day, I mentioned that the CBS people were going to show games in a 2-2-2-2-4-4 format.  That means that the late games will go off at roughly the same time.  I'll go over the next 4 games  and update the blog once they are finished:

Maryland / Xavier:

Maryland: 115

Xavier: 109

VegasLine: Maryland by 1.5

This promises to be the closest game of the early afternoon games.  It's a little closer than you would think for a 6/11 game to be.  I'm thinking that maybe due to Xavier being a little underseeded at 11.  Apparently, a lot of people agree with me, since it looks like it's about a draw based on the picks.

Villanova / Mt. St. Mary's:

Villanova: 223

Mt. St. Mary's: 1 (Kevin F. #3)

Vegas Line: Villanova by 25.5

This was the other option for the biggest upset in tournament history.  It seems pretty unlikely.  This definitely seems like one of the games I'll be streaming on the laptop instead of putting it on one of the 2 big screen TVs.  That could change if Mt. St. Mary's could manage to keep it close.  Somehow I doubt that will happen.

St. Mary's / VCU:

St. Mary's: 141

VCU: 83

Vegas Line: St. Mary's by 4.5

This could wind up being a pretty good game.  Both of these teams are mid-major darlings from the last few years.  In a perfect world, I'd rather see these teams playing some middling major conference team and beating them.  Sadly, we will be without one of them after this game.

Purdue / Vermont

Purdue: 195

Vermont: 29

Vegas Line: Purdue by 9.5

Here's what I know about Purdue:  I'm pretty sure they haven't made a Final 4 in my lifetime.  They've had some really good teams over the years.  Teams I've really liked.  Somehow they manage to disappoint in the tournament.  Then again, Villanova had a similar reputation before last season.  I'm not sure if they are going to make it past Vermont.  Maybe this will be the upset I've been longing for.  I have Iowa State (a team with a similar reputation) in the sweet 16, so I'm hoping so.
