Klei's Sports Blog: The "What the cuss, Vanderbilt?" edition

We have a short break as the first set of 8 games are complete. As I thought, the number of perfect brackets are severely dwindled. There are only 32 sheets that went 8/8. That's pretty decent. I think the even more amazing thing is that 158 sheets have not lost even a single Sweet 16 team. That means of the 126 sheets that lost a first round game, those teams that they lost weren't going to win another game anyway, so the damage was kept to a minimum. We did manage to lose our first Final 4 teams, but only 2 (1 for Minnesota, 1 for Vanderbilt). That's a lot of unscathed brackets.

A note about the Vanderbilt game. I was watching the last half of that game, and I was thinking, "This Fisher-Davis kid is amazing". He was making almost everything he threw up in the second half. Then they got the lead with <30 seconds to play and he fouled the Northwestern player. I thought that was a strange strategy, and that maybe the Northwestern guy was a lousy free throw shooter. Turns out the guy shot about 87%. The whole thing was head scratching. After a while, it seems like it wasn't some kind of strategy, it was just a dumb play. Truly a terrible way to lose for Vanderbilt.
