NCAA Midway through Round 2

The last 4 games of the day all seemed to finish kind of around the same time tonight, so instead of sending something out after between the two sets of two games, I waited until all 4 were done to send out a summary.

With the exception of the 2 major upsets (Villanova, Florida State), today was pretty chalky.  The other 6 games went by the seeds.  That's why the Gutless bracket is currently in 18th in points.  However, because Villanova was the overall #1 seed, they no longer have a champion and will lose all those points.  That means the gutless bracket is in 186th in net points.  That may too far down to survive too many more hits.  It would bring a smile to my face to see that bracket eliminated as soon as I can run the numbers after the Sweet 16.

But onto the last 4 games.  As I mentioned before they were all chalk.  They were not only chalk, none of them was anything like a 12 over a 13, they were three #4 seeds and a #2 seed.  I thought maybe one of the #5 seeds might win, but it was not meant to be.  I was really hoping to see Iowa State win.  It looked they used all their energy coming back from 19 down.  But just as the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano every spring, Iowa State managed to let me down.  I have to remember that for next year.

Despite the 4 games going to the favorites, the average sheet only got 4.96 points.  35 people managed to get all 4 games correct.  Somehow, three people managed to go 4/4 in these late games (Wayne D. #2, Howard S. #1, Hal R. #2).  That brings us to the day totals.  See the table below:

One person managed to get all 8 games correct today.  That person was Tim's Stepson.  Truly an amazing run of picking.  He seems to be a real Jeckyll and Hyde bracket.  He managed to get 15/16 on Day 1, but only 10/16 on Day 2 dropping him from 7th to 122nd.  Today's performance vaults him back up to 2nd.  The two people who got 7/8 games right today were Paul R. #1 (45th to 6th) and Larry G. #3 (129th to 6th).  Great picking by those people.

On the opposite end, there was 3 people who only got 1/8 games right today.  Maybe it's not a big surprise, but these brackets weren't really on sound footing going into today.  They were Wayne D. #2 (78th to 207th), Kansas C. #4 (202nd to 221st) and Eleanor (216th to 222nd).

Despite it being mostly a chalk day, the average amount of points won today was only 8.10.  That seems like a low number.  Then again there were 4 games that were supposed to be 4/5 games, which are always a bit of a coin flip.

The biggest mover up in the standings today was not someone that got 8/8 or even 7/8.  It was Jay H. #3, who started the day in 183rd place, but by going 6/8 and not losing any Elite 8 teams, finished in 53rd place, an upward move of 130 places.  He still has some work to do to get into contention, but at least he's in better striking distance.  The biggest dropper of the day was Craig G.  He started the day in 22nd place, but after going 2/8 and losing Villanova as champion and Notre Dame in the Elite 8, fell all the way to 171st.  The moral of the story is that there is still a lot of movement to be had if you can predict the right games.

There are only 4 people still alive that can get all the remaining points (Jana T., Irene H. #3, Kansas C. #3, Ron KY).  That is a wonderful position to be in.  All 4 of them are in the top 10 in net points, as you might expect.  Those 4 plus Tim's Stepson and Damien R. #3 are the only people still alive that have all Elite 8 teams alive.  96 people still have all 4 of their Final 4 teams still alive, and 192 people still have a champion still playing.  That still keeps a lot of brackets in play.
