NCAA Tournament - 2nd round, BOOM, down goes the #1 overall seed edition.

Finally!!!  We had the first HUGE upset of the tournament.  The defending champion and overall #1 seed of the tournament is out!!  That doesn't do anything for me as someone that was predicting a rematch of last year's championship, but it does throw the tournament into chaos and it severely cripples the Gutless brackets.  I feel somewhat prescient in that I said that there is always at least one region that is the chaos region.  I thought it would be the East bracket based on who people were picking, and it looks like that's going to happen with the 1 seed now gone.

To be honest, Wisconsin was always underseeded as an #8 seed.  They were the only Big 10 team seeded in the Top 4 at the midterm seeding announcement.  Also, if people remember Villanova's reputation prior to last year it was that of a team that almost always went out way earlier than they were supposed to.  It was only through an incredible hot streak of shooting that they were able to complete a run to the title last year.

So, you remember that there were about 6 teams that had about an equal number of people picking them to win the whole tournament.  Villanova was one of them, but for some reason, the highest ranked bracket that had Villanova winning it all was in a tie for 28th after the first round.  All the others had people in the top 10.  I'm not sure what the significance is of this statistic, but I thought it was fascinating.

So, it should come as no surprise that not many people went 2/2 in this set of games.  There was only 2 people that went 2/2 - and that paid off richly in moves up the rankings.  They were Tim's Stepson (122nd after round 1, 15th right now) and Larry G. #3 (129th to 21st).  That's what 2 points can do at this point.   118 people went 0/2 in the first 2 games.

That brings us to a more interesting ranking...  the net points rankings.  For most people, getting  no points in this game didn't change the overall ranking too much, but it made a huge difference in the net points.  For example if Bracket A and Bracket B both had 25 points going into this game, they both would have the same number of points after this game if they both picked Villanova to win.  However, if bracket A had Villanova losing in the next round and bracket B had Villanova winning it all, bracket B is obviously in worse shape and would be in much lower place in the net standings rankings.  A good example of this is our current leader Chris T. #1.  He had Villanova in the Final 4, so even though he is currently in 1st in points, he is 26th in net points.  On the opposite side, Dan Dz. had Villanova losing to Florida in the Sweet 16, so he is back in 1st in net points.  I knew there was a reason I used that statistic.

This is the biggest point spread of the day, so I'm naturally wearing my Northwestern T-shirt.  Maybe the Villanova game will give Gonzaga a wake up call.  They struggled a little in the opening round.  Then again, Northwestern needed a total brain meltdown by Vanderbilt to advance, so who knows what will happen here.  All bets are off...

Florida State / Xavier

I was pretty impressed with Florida State in the opening round.  I hadn't seen much of them this season, but they are huge.  Every one of their players seem like they are 7' and 250 pounds of muscle.  Xavier was one of those #11 seeds that seemed underseeded when the brackets came out.  Wait a second, an underseeded team that is a 6 point underdog.  That sounds a lot like the Wisconsin game we just saw.  Maybe we'll get another upset.  Is that too much to ask?  I don't think so.
