I am quickly becoming a fan of the quasi-annual get together
that Szecho L. and I have during March Madness.
It's rare that I meet someone with such arcane knowledge of college
basketball players that extends as far back as mine, so it's entertaining to discuss
basketball history, especially tournament history. Unfortunately for us, the first two games of
the night that were on while we were enjoying some beer and pizza were total
duds. I think at one point we almost got
excited when Butler got to within 11 points in the second half, but North
Carolina hit another 3, and we went back to discussing point guards from
Memphis teams of old and why the Big 12 has so many former Illinois head
coaches among their ranks. Baylor barely
scored 20 points in the first half, and never threatened to make their game
close.
I was mistaken about one thing in the early games. I said that no one would get any points for
South Carolina, and I was wrong. One
person did (Missy W. #2). I was right
about not having to worry too much about it, since traditionally if you had a
wacky bracket enough to have had South Carolina in the Elite 8, you probably
have a bunch of other wacky stuff that didn't actually happen. That is exactly the case here.
The later games were better, and we had our first overtime
of the tournament and a couple of buzzer beaters in the same game. That was fun.
From a pool perspective, a lot went according to form tonight. North Carolina was a very popular pick to
make it at least this far, so damage was limited to mostly people that picked a
Butler upset. The real blood bath was
UCLA/Kentucky. Most people had one of
these 2 teams going to the Elite 8 and the split was roughly even. That means if you lost this game, you
essentially lost 8 points to the field (4 you didn't win + 4 won by
Kentucky). That's a lot to recover from,
and this game knocked a ton of people out.
The other side of the bracket didn't much matter except at the margins.
IT should come as little surprise that no one got 4/4 today. The best picking were the 8 people that got
3/4. Among those were the biggest mover
in the rankings today, Roth W. #2, who started the day in 135th and finished in 47th. He is still alive for all four places as a
result.
Remember yesterday when I said the big winner of the day was
Kirt R. #2 because he went 4/4 and got all 16 points? Well, it looks like it's feast or famine for
Kirt R. #2 because he was one of 15 people today who went 0/4. On the bright side, he is still somehow alive
for 4th place. Everyone else that went
0/4 today is mathematically eliminated from all payouts.
In other fun news, Jill M. #2 became our first entrant to
have all points accounted for. After
Butler went out, she could no longer gain any more points and finishes the pool
with 49. She wasn't the only
person. By the end of the day, 16 people
lost every Final 4 team. Currently, the
best of those brackets was Todd K. #2 who is currently in 83rd place with 59
points. If anyone is curious, there are
no brackets left that can go 4/4.
There's still 35 people that have both finalists alive, but only one of
those people has Florida as one of them.
For those that want to see what they are alive for, here's
the matrix view:

Fun fact, regardless of anything else, if Florida wins the
championship, Bosun S. will win the pool.
If Florida loses at any time, Bosun is eliminated from all spots. That's why his odds are 1/8 = 12.5%.

So, that's a little more of a blood bath than I was
expecting, specially considering that no one has Xavier in the final 4. Probably the teams that would lose if Gonzaga
won would be people that had Arizona, and will fall too far back if they lose 8
points to the Gonzaga crowd. I'm hoping
for a good game. Gonzaga looks to be a
pretty heavy favorite, but that could be said for all of Xavier's games so far,
I think.
Good luck to everyone!!!!
