Thursday night results

I think my rule of thumb regarding upsets is that I want to see about 25% of games end up in upsets.  That being the case, tonight was a pretty good night.  Arizona was certainly a sexy pick to make the Final 4 (I picked them), but they came up short tonight against Xavier.  The rest of the games were more or less chalk (Oregon wasn't supposed to be there, but neither was Michigan).  Given that Xavier is an 11 seed in the Elite 8, it's probably not hard to imagine that not many people managed to go 4/4.  You would be right in that guess.  Only 1 person managed to pull that feat off, none other than Kirt R. #2.  With those points, Kirt R. #2 moved up 106 spots in the points rankings to 9th place.  He also vaulted his odds to win the whole thing from 1.1078% this morning to 5.1270% this evening.  That's pretty amazing.

The other big winner for the day was Kansas C. #3.  She was the only person at the start of the day that could still go 8/8 in the elite 8.  Despite only going 3/4 today, she still has Gonzaga coming out of the West region, so she is still in great shape.  She dramatically increased her chances of winning today by starting at 3.9139% and rocketing up to 15.1449%, largely to Oregon winning, who she has winning it all.

In addition to Kansas C. #3, Irene H. #2 remain as the only people that can still win all remaining points.

Despite everything that happened today, only 112 people are completely eliminated from contention for something, meaning roughly half the field is still alive.  Despite that, there are only 5 brackets that have all four Final 4 teams still alive.  Not just the aforementioned Kansas C. #3 and Irene H. #2, but Kirt R. #2 and Kansas C. #1 & Kansas C. #2.  Amazing.  She doesn't even have the same Final 4 in her 3 brackets.  She has Baylor and Gonzaga in all 3, but other combinations elsewhere.  Really amazing picking.

To nobody's surprise, the Kentucky/UCLA game means a ton to a lot of people, and the Florida/Wisconsin game - not so much.  Remember that these are only single game eliminations.  A combination of losses could knock you out.  Also, these are just first place eliminations.  Often times, you are eliminated from 1st, but still alive for 2nd, 3rd or 4th.  I will send something out tomorrow night about the results from Friday at the end of the night.
