First 2 game outcomes for tomorrow (Clemson / Arizona & UConn / SDSU)

We are back again tomorrow with arguably one of my least favorite days of the tournament, and also one that poses a very particular problem for me.

The thing I don’t like about tomorrow is that they are playing essentially 2 doubleheaders at around the same time.  What I would like to do is give everyone the stats for one game at a time, and then provide information about the next game afterwards.  I can’t really do that here.  I have to give information about both games as if they independent events and happening simultaneously.  Where that leaves me is a problem that I will illustrate with the following example:

Say there are 7 ways I can win the pool.  If one result happens in one game, 5/7 ways I can win are dead.  If one result happens in the second game 6/7 ways I can win are dead.  No one result will knock me out, but the combination of results very easily could.  I don’t have a great way of letting people know that.  In years past, I’ve just given out the single game eliminations and told people that a combination could knock them out and to look at the matrix to see if it did.  This year, I’m at least going to provide a little more context to what happens as a result of the outcomes for the 2 games.

For each game, I am going to tell you who gets eliminated from what payout if a result happens.  That’s the same as before.  I also figured out a way to list whose odds to win the pool don’t change at all regardless of the outcome, whose odds of winning the pool increase and by how much, and whose odds of winning the pool decrease and by how much for each outcome.

That brings me to my second dilemma.  I don’t really get out of work until 5:30, and by the time I get home, I won’t be able to watch much of the first two games.  That sucks, because one of them is SDSU….  I can listen to it on XM in my car, which is probably the best I can do.

My third dilemma is what am I going to wear?  Every school I have worn so far has not only lost, but got hopelessly crushed.  My rule of thumb is to wear the school with the biggest point spread.  Unfortunately for me, tomorrow, that is San Diego State.  There is no way I am jinxing them by wearing their t-shirt after the first 2 rounds.  Clemson it is!!!

I love how 9 people can get 4 points here with Clemson.  This tournament has been really, really chalky and Clemson totally disrupts that.  7.5 points doesn’t seem to bad.  I kind of hope them win, mostly because I love to see people take risks and get rewarded for it.  Picking chalk sucks.  Honestly, most people didn’t even have Clemson winning A game, much less 3+ games.  Lots of respect for the people picking Clemson.

I also want to make a note about Arizona.  Keshad Johnson plays for them now.  He transferred from SDSU in the offseason.  I’d like to see him do well, even though I’d like to see him do well even more in an Aztec’s jersey.  Also, Caleb Love plays for Arizona.  For those unfamiliar with him, he played for North Carolina 2 years ago when they made the Championship game, and also last year when UNC started out the season as the #1 ranked team and didn’t make the tournament.  He then transferred to Michigan.  Then, sometime before the season started, decided that Michigan was going to be Gawd-awful this year and transferred to Arizona.  Two things – The transfer portal is pretty amazing.  There’s no way he could do that even 2 years ago.  Second: how terrible must the environment been at Michigan that he left before even playing a game there.  Not only did they finish last in the Big 10 and fire their coach, they were last by 4 games.  Wow!!  That’s real bad for a team that typically just reloads.  Well, they hired the Florida Atlantic coach in the offseason and they probably have more money than the US Treasury to throw at players, so they may be back sooner rather than later.

This one seems like it is the most important game of the season.  It’s a rematch of not only last years Championship game, but of the 2011 Sweet 16 matchup between arguable one of the best SDSU teams ever (although arguably the team we had in the COVID year would have been a 1seed) with Kawhi Leonard and Connecticut’s Kemba Walker team that won the tournament.  If I remember right. UConn was a 3 and SDSU was a 2 that year, and this was the only game UConn played where they weren’t the favorite all tournament.

Not only that, but UConn comes into this game a heavy favorite.  Last year, in the same part of the bracket, SDSU played against overall #1 seed Alabama and knocked them out of the tournament.  The difference between that game that this is that UConn is favored by 4 more points than Alabama was, so if people didn’t think SDSU had much of a shot last year, they REALLY don’t think they do this year.

Obviously, I want SDSU to win.  It would do so much good.  SDSU would win.  It would set up an interesting rivalry with UConn.  It would deny a team all the experts are slobbering over a win (much like Wisconsin over Kentucky in the Final 4 in 2015).  It would throw tons of brackets into chaos.  That alone makes it something we should all root for.
