Round 1 recap

 All right, 32 games down, 31 to go.  I will say this, James Madison and Grand Canyon looked legit.  They were the better team against Wisconsin and St. Mary’s.

The first round finished with 11 lower seeded teams springing upsets against better seeded teams.  Only 2 of those were against Top 4 seeds (Kentucky, Auburn), so it wasn’t nearly as unpredictable as last year, when a #15 and a #16 won.  For those that care about suck things, favorites were 18-14 against the spread.  There were a lot of really high scoring games this afternoon.  I don’t know what the record for over/unders.

If we were giving put money for most points today, we would have a clear winner.  Only one person manager to go 15/16, and that honor goes to Kim F.  She started the day in 144^th place, and is currently in 8^th.  That’s really amazing.  Our overall average was 10.51 games correctly picked.  Yesterday, it was 10.49.  Wow, that is amazingly close.  So, it looks like there wasn’t a world of difference between Thursday and Friday.  A handful of upsets, and one big upset each day.

Only 22 people have lost their Champion.  That is an extremely low number, but not surprising since all the #1s and #2s are still alive.  It also keeps a lot of people alive.  No one has lost all 4 of their Final 4 picks, although 2 people have lost 3 of them.  18 more have lost 2 and a grand total of 89 people have lost at least one Final 4 team.  That means that 185 people still have all 4 of their Final 4 teams still alive.

As far as bracket health goes, only 2 people can still get all remaining points.  They haven’t lost a single Sweet 16 team.  Congratulations to Daisy N. #3 and Paul W.  The amazing thing about Paul is that he missed 12 1^st round games, but none of them were going beyond one round.  That is either lucky of a sign of genius.  I’ll let him decide how he wants to tell that story.

8 people have only lost 1 Sweet 26 team and 25 people have only lost 2 teams, including the Gutless bracket that only picked by the seeds.  I’ll be excited when that bracket loses.  Fun fact, the only bracket that can win a region by the seeds is the Midwest (Purdue’s bracket).  They are already eliminated from the other 3.  That’s good.  It means that picking some upsets has some rewards.
